United Kingdom travel guide: 12 destinations

OFAQ WORLD covers 12 destinations across the United Kingdom, from London and the historic cities of England to Edinburgh, Glasgow and two islands. Three large city guides do most of the work: London with 99 places, Edinburgh with 97 and Manchester with 94. The other nine are compact guides of 24 or 25 places each, enough for a day trip or a short stay.

The London guide covers Westminster, free national museums such as the British Museum, and Borough Market, and lists five airports: LHR, LGW, STN, LTN and LCY. Edinburgh pairs Castle Rock and the Royal Mile with day trips to the Scottish coast and has its own airport (EDI). Manchester (MAN) is the place for industrial heritage and museums.

For history, Bath has the Roman Baths, Georgian crescents and the Pulteney Bridge, and York has York Minster, the medieval Shambles and walks on the city walls. Oxford brings college quads, the Radcliffe Camera and the Ashmolean Museum; Cambridge has King's College Chapel, punting on the Cam and the Fitzwilliam Museum. Bristol adds the SS Great Britain, a lively harbour and the Clifton Suspension Bridge.

Liverpool has the Royal Albert Dock, The Beatles Story and two large cathedrals, and Glasgow has Kelvingrove's collections, the Riverside Museum and the Victorian Necropolis. For landscapes, the Isle of Skye guide covers the Old Man of Storr, the Fairy Pools and Neist Point lighthouse, and the Isle of Wight guide covers Osborne House, Carisbrooke Castle and The Needles.
