Jerusalem's Old City holds sites that are central to Judaism, Christianity and Islam, often within a few minutes' walk of each other. Our guide lists 10 places of worship, from the best-known landmarks to smaller churches and cathedrals of the city's many Christian communities.
In the Old City, the Western Wall is a plaza at the retaining wall of the Temple Mount (Haram al-Sharif), and the golden Dome of the Rock above it is best admired from permitted viewpoints. In the Christian Quarter, the Via Dolorosa is the pilgrim route toward the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, a major Christian pilgrimage church. In the Jewish Quarter, the rebuilt Hurva Synagogue is a landmark of its own.
The guide also maps the Co-Cathedral of the Most Holy Name of Jesus on Latin Patriarchate Road, the Melkite Cathedral of the Annunciation of the Virgin, Saint James Cathedral, St. Toros Church and the Chapelle Saint Vincent de Paul. These are active religious sites: dress modestly, keep your voice down and respect any local rules on access and photography.
