Best time to visit Madrid: weather by month

Madrid has hot, dry summers and cool winters. Using NASA POWER data for 2014–2023, average daily highs climb from 10 °C in January to 35 °C in July, and the city receives about 479 mm of rain a year. It sits about 666 m above sea level, and winter nights are cold: average lows are just 1 °C in January and February.

For walking between the Prado, Retiro Park and the tapas bars around Plaza Mayor, the most comfortable months are usually April and May (highs of 19 °C and 24 °C) and late September into October (28 °C, then 23 °C). Spring brings some showers: April averages 61 mm.

July and August are the hottest months, with highs of 35 °C and 34 °C, and also the driest (11 mm and 16 mm). Plan museum visits and indoor time for the afternoon and save outdoor sightseeing for mornings and evenings.

October is the wettest month at 66 mm, and November and December stay fairly damp. Winter brings fewer showers than late autumn and crisp days, but pack a warm layer for evenings.
