Places of worship in Warsaw: historic churches

Our Warsaw guide lists 10 places of worship, and several of the best known stand along Krakowskie Przedmieście, the historic street that runs towards the rebuilt Old Town. You can see most of them in one walk.

Holy Cross Church, opposite the main Warsaw University campus, is one of the most notable Baroque churches in the capital, and its interior contains the embalmed heart of the composer Frédéric Chopin. A short walk away, at Krakowskie Przedmieście 34, the Visitationist Church (St Joseph of the Visitationists) is one of the city's most notable rococo churches, and the Carmelite Church, formally the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and of St Joseph, stands at numbers 52/54.

Just off this route, Holy Trinity Church on Plac Małachowskiego is a Lutheran church, also known as Zug's Protestant Church after its architect Szymon Bogumił Zug. It is one of three Augsburg Evangelical churches in Warsaw, one of the largest churches in the city and notable for its round design.

The guide also includes smaller churches and chapels, such as the Church of the Immaculate Conception on Krakowskie Przedmieście, and a meeting place of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers). These are active places of worship, so dress respectfully and keep quiet during services.
