Zagreb places of worship: churches and chapels

Our Zagreb guide lists 10 places of worship. Most are Catholic churches and chapels in the historic Upper Town and around Kaptol, and the list also includes a Greek Catholic co-cathedral, a Serbian Orthodox cathedral and a Baptist church.

The Upper Town holds several of the oldest sites. The Church of St Mark is the parish church of old Zagreb, on St Mark's Square, and one of the oldest architectural monuments in the city. Nearby, the Church of St Catherine is a Baroque church considered the finest example of Baroque architecture in Zagreb. The Stone Gate, built between 1242 and 1266 and given its present appearance in the 18th century, serves as a shrine of the Virgin Mary: its painting survived the Great Fire of Zagreb in 1731.

Close to St Mark's Square, the Co-cathedral of Saints Cyril and Methodius is the historicist co-cathedral of the Greek Catholic Eparchy of Križevci. The Cathedral of the Transfiguration of the Lord, also known as the Zagreb Orthodox Cathedral, is the cathedral church of the Metropolitanate of Zagreb and Ljubljana of the Serbian Orthodox Church.

The guide also includes the city's main cathedral, St Mary's Church by Tkalčićeva Street, the Church of St Francis of Assisi in Kaptol, the Chapel of the Wounded Jesus on Ilica and the Baptist Church Zagreb. When visiting during services, dress modestly and keep your voice down.
